Jean Winslow

My journey as an artist has taken a winding path, each twist and turn connected by my commitment to the arts.

As a student at the Rhode Island School of Design I learned to approach life as an empty canvas, full of latent possibilities. After RISD I began to explore these opportunities in New York, achieving success as a children’s book illustrator. Later, while raising a family I developed innovative art programs for children. The success of these programs inspired me to pursue a career in the arts in therapy. Over the years I have developed a wide spectrum of clinical specialties including the treatment of trauma through art, psychodrama and advanced practices of visualization. Currently, I offer professional training programs in art therapy and psychodrama and workshops on enhancing creativity.

As I return to studio art with new vigor and vitality, a rich cross-fertilization occurs between each of my professional roles. My images and artistic decisions are informed and enriched by the depth of my work as a healer, while my skills as a therapist are enhanced by my creative development. The path has come full circle.

Artist’s Statement

Wisdom speaks first in images.
W.B. Yeats

I have followed two separate but parallel paths in my roles as artist and therapist. At the heart of each are the stories that emerge and guide the journey.

My story as an artist begins as a child, drawing before I could walk, entering a private world where I could create stories from my imagination. It leads me to art school at Rhode Island School of Design, careers as a book illustrator in New York, a painter and printmaker and to my work as a therapist incorporating the arts in healing. My quest for a perfect blend of spontaneity, creativity, fantasy and reality that began as a child is realized in making art and aiding others to find their own paths to a creative life. In both roles I am immersed in a state of passionate play that draws on instinct, intuition discipline and skill. It is a way of telling stories that build empathy while recreating reality through imaginative images and poetic action.

My portfolio includes some of my recent work, including monoprints created with water based inks and combined with solaretchings and chine colle. I continue to be fascinated by the intricacies of the monoprint process. It offers the fluidity of paint, along with the mysteries and surprises of free yet disciplined play. Layers of color, shapes, and nuanced textural effects create evocative images revealing stories that are like long lost manuscripts of the soul. My paintings, collages and prints all come into being largely through an intuitive process that connects me to a rich treasury of imagery. My story is coming full circle as I reach back to my roots as a dreamer of unseen vistas and forge ahead into new unexplored realms, open to the imagination of the viewer.

I invite you to come along on the journey!

Art attracts us by what it reveals of our most secret self.
